The Club

The history, people and facilities of Serres Aero Club.

SINCE 1984

From a hang-gliding association to today’s aero club

The club was founded in 1984 as the Serres Hang Gliding Association and adopted its present name in 1999. It is a member of the Hellenic Aeronautical and Airsports Federation and a registered sports association.

Its facilities have hosted airsports, competitions, educational activity and a community of more than 100 members and athletes.

A LIVING LANDMARK

Lockheed T‑33A
TR‑881

Built in 1952, it served with the Royal Netherlands and Hellenic Air Forces and was granted to the club after retirement. It arrived from the 110 Combat Wing on 14 May 2000.

Infrastructure with purpose

Aircraft hangar

With offices, storage, hostel accommodation and a classroom.

Free-flight launch sites

Across Menikio, Pangaio and Beles, at 950–1,100 m elevation.

Airfield upgrade

Paved runway, underground cabling, taxiways and expanded parking.

2025

Second aircraft shelter

Completed through the LEADER+ programme.

The Aeronautical Centre is accessible to people with disabilities and was developed with LEADER II/II+ funding on land granted in 1998.

INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE

Association, governance and public service

Institutional standing

Member of the Hellenic Aeronautical and Airsports Federation and registered in the General Secretariat of Sports electronic register under code ΩΩ64.

Sporting experience

The former site records 20 licensed light and ultralight pilots, 15 hang-glider pilots and 10 model-aircraft/drone operators, alongside aeromodellers and skydivers. These figures are presented as an archive record.

Aviation tourism

The Club invites and hosts crews from foreign aero clubs and has developed activity under the patronage of the competent Minister of Tourism.
